Bubonic Plague in Santa Fe, NM
Meridee and I ( a.k.a. Storyboard Squad) thought we had moved from Venice beach, CA to Santa Fe, NM.
Not the dark ages.
But there are actually animals, pets, and sometimes even people coming down with Bubonic Plague here each year.
The fleas transmit it, just like in days of old, although a recent documentary suggests the Black Death which wiped out 1/3 of the European population (where I am from- the horror), was quite likely an Ebola type virus with a long incubation period, spread through human contact like the common cold.
Conclusions were drawn from both how fast it spread, and detailed church records kept in an English village.
Yesterday we met someone in a jewellery store who found a dead rabbit in their driveway, and lab tests confirmed it died of Bubonic plague.
People came and dusted their whole property with flea powder.
Apart from dodging scythe bearing skeletons in tatty cloaks which dance about the place at dusk, living here in Santa Fe is great.
I've even turned my hand to making bronze sculptures which you can see HERE.
